Shravan Purnima Shraddha

English Meaning of the Festival

Shravan Purnima Shraddha is a sacred Hindu ritual observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shravan month. The word “Shraddha” means faith, reverence, and devotion, and refers to rituals performed in honour of one’s ancestors. On this day, Hindus offer prayers, food, and water to remember and show gratitude to departed family members.

How the Date is Decided Annually

The date is calculated according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Shravan Purnima falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the Shravan month. Because it follows the lunar cycle, the Gregorian date varies each year.

Significance of the Festival to Hinduism

Shraddha is considered a sacred duty (dharma) in Hinduism, performed to honour ancestors and uphold family values. It is believed that ancestors bless their descendants when Shraddha is performed with sincerity and devotion. The ritual helps in maintaining a spiritual connection with one’s lineage and expressing gratitude for the life and opportunities passed down by previous generations.

How to Observe/Practice

The observance of Shravan Purnima Shraddha usually involves devotees waking up early, bathing, and wearing clean or traditional clothes. A special meal is prepared without onion or garlic. Food is first offered to the ancestors symbolically. Devotees may also offer Tarpan.
