1908
1908 The spark
The visit of Swami Shankaranandaji — at the invitation of the Arya Samaj movement in Natal — stirred the Hindu community. From that visit grew the idea of a single national body to bring Hindus together across the country.

1912
31 May 1912 The founding conference
Delegates from all the provinces gathered for a founding conference, in which women and children took part with great enthusiasm. From that gathering, the South African Hindu Maha Sabha was established as the national voice of Hindus in South Africa.

1944
January 1944 The first Conference on Hindu Temples
Convened in Durban, the first Conference on Hindu Temples brought together representatives of 27 temples. It affirmed the temple as a centre of worship — a place for regular services, and for spreading religious ideas through the community.

Through the decades
A democratic forum A home for every tradition
The Maha Sabha grew into a democratic forum for all traditions within Hinduism. It does not direct belief or practice; instead it welcomes every school and guides its work by the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — OUR MOTTO.
